The Curse of the Candy Cottage

Image.jpg

The Curse of the Candy Cottage, a new family play by Lisa Jo Rudy, produced through the Woods Hole Theater Company. Candy Cottage is a modern, magical mashup of two classic fairy tales: Hansel and Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty. Candy Cottage is a play about finding our own strengths despite all odds.

At just over an hour long, Candy Cottage is a terrific starting place for young actors and for adults new to or returning to the stage. It’s also a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, teens, and children to work together on a full-fledged community production.

Auditions will be held from 1-3 on Saturday November 22 and 3-5 on Sunday November 23 in the Community Hall in Woods Hole. No prep needed, but come ready to improvise, read, and move!

Rehearsals will be held early evenings and Saturday/Sunday afternoons. Tech week will be during Winter Break: Feb. 14-19. Performances will be on the weekends of Feb 20-22 and Feb 27-March 1.

You must be in touch at that time to participate!

What we’re looking for: Anyone ages six and up who is interested in being part of – and helping to polish – a brand new family-friendly play.

Opportunities: Roles of all sizes for children ages six and up, teens, and adults. There are many roles for girls and women, and many that are gender neutral.

There are no “romantic leads,” but there are several strong roles that require acting chops and the ability to make the audience believe in “real” magic.

Backstage support. We are in special need of costumers, but also need and welcome anyone of any age interested in working on props, set building/painting, running lights/sound, helping with curtains, backstage management, etc. Wranglers. Whether you’re a responsible teen, a parent, or a grandparent, we can use your help in supporting younger actors with costume changes, stage entrances, and staying quiet and calm during our short production.

Available Roles: Some people may be cast in multiple roles. Note ages, genders, and role sizes. Cast:

• Narrator (large role; any age or gender)

• Queen (medium role for a strong, motherly adult woman; Luna’s mother)

The following schedule is close to final. NO ONE will be asked to attend all rehearsals, but EVERYONE will be expected to attend rehearsals regularly. In addition, everyone in the cast should expect to be in rehearsals from February 15 on – which means everyone must be in town during winter break from school. While children may be dropped off for rehearsals, we will be asking parents to take active roles in the production as possible. For example, we’ll be recruiting for backstage “wranglers,” costumers, and backstage roles of various sorts. Interested siblings are also welcome to get involved, whether by painting sets, helping with props, pulling curtains, etc. Saturday generally afternoon 3-5 (tech work may happen on Sunday mornings);

Evenings generally 5:30-7:30 or 8 (could extend to 8:30 if needed). FCTV = Falmouth TV on Dillingham; WHCH = Woods Hole Community Hall on Water St.; date = planned but may not be needed depending on circumstances.
